Trend Alert: Nautical

Spring 2010, and I’m seeing stripes! Derek Lam used them, so did Marc Jacobs in his collection as well as for Louis Vuitton. Nautical stripes are hardly anything new in fashion, but give it a little twist, and your look will be fashionably forward and fresh!

The key with the nautical look is to keep it clean and always remember not to overdo a trend, but especially this one since being a ‘slutty sailor’ is a common Halloween costume. In order to keep your look from being costumey while embracing this trend, have one piece of your ensemble be nautically inspired, while leaving the rest more neutral or of a different style/trend entirely. Mixing and matching is fun, just don’t get too carried away. For example, the stylish Nicole Richie (left), is spicing up a cool look with a red striped scarf. Red and stripes scream nautical, but Nicole plays it down with her black and grey outfit. She lets the scarf be the focal piece, and doesn’t overdo it. This is a great example of how to keep it casual yet stylish. Another example is Academy Award Nominee, Carey Mulligan (right), is also showing off the casual nautical inspired look. The actress is wearing a cute cardigan with comfy slacks. Who said being stylish and being comfortable couldn’t go together? These ladies show that keeping up with trends doesn’t take a lot of effort!

Model Kate Moss (above), keeps up with effortless chic vibe with a boat-neck striped tee, a leather coat, jeans, and boots. She looks fresh and fashionable, yet ready to run errands. This is why the nautical trend is so hot, because it is so easy to look fabulous while wearing something so simple. Another great example of the subtle stripe is pictured below from a recent Coco Models photo shoot I styled. This dress is a perfect piece for this trend because the stripes are in a place that is flattering on every body type. Its sophisticated yet not overstated. This is a great look for a night out on the town!

Below are some more wonderful nautical inspired looks to get your mind going. This trend is wonderful for both men and women, no matter what your age!

Note: Men if you want more inspiration for this trend, just check out Polo Ralph Lauren, Nautica or Gant. If you want to, ‘look sophisticated enough to own a boat’, these brands all love the nautical trend and they’ll make sure you fit the part!
