Trend Alert: Maxi Skirts

I have always been a big fan of the long and the lovely maxi dresses, and this season I have become an even bigger fan of maxi skirts! While many shy away from taking it to the maxi, claiming they’re too short or not confident enough to wear the length. I, however, believe if its the right fit it doesn’t matter how tall you are! Whether you’re five feet or six feet, wearing a maxi length dress or skirt requires the right fit in terms of  how it flatters and where the length ends on you. Don’t be surprised if you need to do a little altering to get you looking good in your maxi.

The great thing about the maxi skirt, rather than maxi dresses, is you know if it works for you much more easily. Since you’re able to play match maker with your top, it allows you to wear a skirt in many different ways that suit your personal style and shape. Celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe shows off how to make a maxi skirt look super sophisticated yet sexy (left), demonstrating that its all about how you wear and pair the maxi skirt (and not about how tall or short you are). The key point is to ensure the skirt highlights the smallest part of your waist, too high or too low won’t do with this piece. If you’re not sure where your smaller part is, its at your natural waist, which is about where you want your skirt to sit. To find your natural waist, bend over to the side, the crease created in your side is where it is!

Try printed, patterned, textured or solid! Use a maxi skirt to play dress up or keep it casual; make a statement or simply support one. You can find beautiful maxi skirts at all price points, my favourite I found at H&M and I’ve marveled at the runway maxis (like this Jill Sander Spring 2011 RTW, left).

Here are a few examples of some of the most stylish celebrities out there sporting the seasons hottest garment. Some of these stars are short and some are tall, and the maxi skirt seems to work on them all! Its all about styling your look to fit your personality and flatter your body.

Maxi skirts can be worn in so many ways, whether you’re style is sexy, sophisticated, cute, casual or anything in between! Day or night, get creative! There are so many different styles to choose from, like these two adorable yet different maxi skirts, the printed Winter Kate (left) and the pleated Sandro Jarod (right). Maxi skirts will be making their way into fall fashion this year, so if you’re feeling this trend, now is the time to dive in and learn to wear your maxi with blazers and cropped cardigans
