Shoe Sense: Animal Instincts

For Christmas, my parents gave me a gorgeous pair of Steve Madden animal print pumps (right) I’d had my eye on at Town Shoes. This shoe has quickly become one of my favourites, contending with my cobalt BCBGeneration and spikey Sam Edelman heels (both also from Town Shoes). By some standards some might call me a ‘shoe-aholic’!

A few years ago I picked up a pair of animal print Coach ballet flats, which I still wear regularly and are in excellent condition. I am so glad I now can mix the animal print in when I’m keeping my look laid back, or when I’m going out for a fancier affair.

Animal print is so amazing to work with because it is always on trend and adds a little sexy to your look. I love when this print is mixed and matched into an ensemble, whether its competing with a different pattern or entertaining another animal piece. For example, I often wear animal print shoes with jeans for a tamer getup and I’ve also paired them with floral, striped or other animal print patterns. There are so many ways to wear and pair, check out how these stylish celebs have sported shoes with animal instincts, pictured (left to right): Kristin Cavallari, Christina Aguilera, Adam Lambert, Kim Kardashian, Emma Roberts, Eva Longoria, Jessica Szohr, Kelly Brook, Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Richie, Vanessa Hudgens, and Olivia Palermo.

There are so many great placed to find animal print shoes ranging from cheap chic to uber expensive. You can try virtually any style as well, whatever you’re looking for or prefer, like booties or wedges. Here are some great examples, shoes pictured (left to right) by: Brian Atwood, H&M, Christian Louboutin, Aldo, Emilio Pucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Nine West, Fergie, Zara, Tory Burch,  Jessica Simpson, Fossil, Sam Edelman, Target, Giuseppe Zanotti, and Miu Miu

While zebra and giraffe print are also considered ‘animal’, I really only thing that they look good in slight moderation. Leopard print is the better print to work with when you’re trying to hone your animal instincts style, its more luxurious and sophisticated than the other two (which can sometimes look trashy if not executed correctly).

Adding a little animal to your toes is an easy way to give yourself a few extra style points. While many might fear this sexy standout print, wearing it on your shoes is an easy way to give yourself a little glam without going overboard! For added fun and flare, try a pair of coloured animal print pumps, like these Dolce & Gabanna peep toes (left).
