I am a photography lover, I’m always that girl who has her camera on her and the one who posts the adventures of my fun to my social media pages. I love to both be behind that camera and to admire others works of photographic art. When my boyfriend and
I first moved into our home more than two and a half years ago, we didn’t put much money into the decorations at first as we’d had to buy furniture and other necessities. Over time, we’ve brought things from our parents’ houses and found inexpensive ways to make our place be more of a ‘home’. We receive compliments all the time about just how ‘homey’ our Toronto apartment feels, and I think one of the big reasons is that we have a lot of photos on display. I love collage frames, and we have three in our house filled with the best memories with friends
and family.
My favourite wall in our home is in the bedroom. Charlie and I love to travel, and each time we go somewhere new together we seem to fall in love all over again. I decided to make a collage wall on the main wall of the bedroom, reminding us of this each day as we fall asleep and wake up to the pictures from all the amazing places we’ve been. Sometimes I catch myself just staring at the photos, remembering the details and dreaming of where we want to go exploring together next! As I said, the wall features mostly my personal photos, with the exception of five sizable pieces that we have picked up along the way. I won’t describe all the photos on the wall, but I can tell you that the wall is a mix of different frames, canvas, plaks, and other black and white decorations, and that there are prints of my images from different parts of: Europe, Canada, the USA, Thailand, Hong Kong, and Australia. I can also describe the bigger pictures (the ones that we’ve bought) as you will be able to make out more detail. Starting at the furthest on the left, this box frame canvas print is a photo from inside a telephone
booth in London. At the top in the center, this is of a famous photo of New York City builders in 1932. Below that is a shot of life in the windy city, Chicago 1937. To the top right is a shot of the Eiffel Tower during the winter in Paris. Below that is a special shot that Charlie sent to me while he was on a routine trip to Dubai during his tour with the Canadian Forces in Afghanistan. This is a gorgeous and rare photo of an Arabian white horse that is considered ‘royal’ in the UAE.
I’ve seen many different kinds of collage walls: some being extremely structured and others (like mine) that are more scattered; some are of photos and some of graphic art; some of paintings; some are black and white and some have colour; and
some mix everything together! I love that I can continually add to this wall and expand it. This is a feature I will continue in my future homes as I move through the rest of my life. I’ve grown up with one in my parents house for many years, in fact recently my mom redid this wall using painted metal sheets and magnetized that back of the plaks which allows her to move them around and make new additions fit. Try this out in your home; start small and let it grow! Here are some other ideas to get you started:
